ISLAMIC, Mongols. Ilkhanids. Abaqa, AH 663-681 / AD 1265-1282. Dinar (Gold, 25 mm, 5.20 g), Baghdad, AH 676 = 1277/8. Within a circle, ‘al-ḥamd lillāh / lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad rasūl Allāh / ṣalla Allāh ʿalayh / wa sallam’ (‘Praise be to Allah. There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. May Allah bless him and grant him peace’ in Arabic); in the margin, traces of Qurʾān 3: 26. Rev. Within a circle, ‘qāʾān / pādshāh-i / ʿālam īlkhān / al-aʿẓam / Ābāqā khalada / mulkuhumā’ (‘Khan, the King of the World, [and] the Supreme Ilkhan Abaqa. May their kingdom be perpetuated’ in Arabic); mint and date formula arouns. Album 2126.1. Diler A-68 (with ‘al-mulk lillāh’, instead of ‘al-ḥamd lillāh’). Rare. Struck slightly off center and with areas of weakness, otherwise, about extremely fine.
